Preparing for an early season Ohio deer hunt with Rut Chasers, LLC

Prepare for Your 2025 Ohio Deer Hunt

Rut Chasers, LLC Sep 23, 2025

Deer season in Ohio is almost here, and the excitement is building. Our hunters are preparing for their shot at the buck of a lifetime, and here at Rut Chasers, LLC, we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome our guests for the first week of hunting. Whether this is your first trip to Ohio or you’re a seasoned deer hunter, preparation is the key to a safe, enjoyable, and successful hunt.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to be ready—from licenses and permits to bow/crossbow preparation, travel tips, and arrival expectations. Our goal is simple: when you arrive at Rut Chasers, you’re 100% ready to hit the woods, confident in your equipment, and prepared to make the most of your time with us.

1. Secure Your Ohio Hunting License and Permits

The very first step in preparing for your hunt is making sure you’ve purchased the proper licenses and permits. If you’re a non-resident hunter, you’ll need both:

  • Non-Resident Hunting License – Required for all non-residents hunting in Ohio.

  • Deer Permit – You’ll need an "either-sex deer permit".

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) makes this process straightforward. Licenses and permits can be purchased online through their website, by phone, or at licensed vendors throughout the state. However, we strongly recommend that you purchase them before you leave home. That way, you’ll avoid delays or last-minute stress once you arrive.

Tip: Print a copy of your license and permit, and also keep a digital copy on your phone. Cell service can be spotty in rural Ohio, and having a printed backup ensures you’re always covered.

2. Get Your Crossbow/Compound Bows Ready

Your bow is your most important tool for success, and taking the time to make sure it’s dialed in before your hunt can make the difference between a filled tag and a missed opportunity. Here’s a checklist to follow:

a. Sight In Before You Leave

Make sure your crossbow is properly sighted in at home. Don’t wait until you get to camp to start adjusting your optics. Take it to the range and practice shooting at different distances.

b. Inspect Limbs and Parts

We hope you did this a month ago, but if not, get on it now! Bows operate under a lot of pressure, and wear and tear can happen. At any time, they can fail. Before you pack up:

  • Check the limbs for cracks or stress marks.

  • Inspect the string and cables for fraying or wear.

  • Ensure that all bolts and screws are tightened down.

  • Test your safety mechanisms to make sure everything functions smoothly.

  • Make sure you have new, sharp broadheads and carefully inspect each bolt/arrows for cracks or damage. If they show any signs of damage, throw them away!

c. Pack Spare Parts

Bring along spare strings, cables, and rail lube. The last thing you want is to lose hunting time due to a simple equipment failure that could have been prevented.

d. Re-Check on Arrival

Even if your bow or crossbow is perfectly sighted in at home, travel can sometimes knock things off slightly. Once you arrive at Rut Chasers, plan to take a few practice shots to confirm everything is still on target. This quick check gives you peace of mind before you step into the woods.

3. Prepare Before You Travel

We can’t stress this enough: If possible, get everything done before you come to Ohio. Once you’re here, your time will be focused on making sure you're sighted in and letting us show you to your hunting spot.

Here are a few things to handle before you hit the road:

  • Buy your snacks, drinks, and food ahead of time.

  • Buy your license and deer permits ahead of time.

  • Double-check your hunting clothes and boots.

  • Pack your personal hunting gear—binoculars, rangefinder, gloves, facemasks, etc.

  • Review Ohio’s hunting regulations to make sure you’re compliant.

  • Confirm travel arrangements and directions to Rut Chasers.

We’ve created a Hunting Checklist on our Trip Information Page to help you. Print it out and check items off as you pack. The most successful hunters are the ones who arrive fully prepared.

4. Arrival and Orientation

When you arrive for your Ohio deer hunt with Rut Chasers, we’ll be excited to meet you and get you set up. However, please remember that time is limited. We have multiple hunters arriving, and part of our responsibility is to make sure everyone gets shown to their hunting spots in a timely fashion.

This means we need your help:

  • Be on Time – Arrive when scheduled so that orientation runs smoothly.

  • Be Respectful of the Group – Delays can cause a chain reaction that affects everyone’s first-day preparation.

By working together, we’ll make sure every hunter gets to see their spot and feels confident before heading into the field.

5. Packing for Success

Ohio’s deer season can bring a variety of weather conditions. Temperatures may swing, so layering your clothing is essential. Here’s a a few of the recommended items you'll need:

  • Clothing Layers: Base layers for warmth, mid-layers for insulation, and outer layers that are waterproof and windproof.

  • Boots: Scent-free, waterproof rubber boots are best.

  • Safety Harness: Bring one because you never know if we might need to put you in a treestand. Harnesses are mandatory in treestands of any kind.

  • Headlamp/Flashlight: Although you may want one to help track a deer or locate something in your pack in the dark, we recommend avoiding bright lamps while walking out.

  • Backpack/Daypack: To carry water, snacks, and extra gear to the stand.

  • Scent Control: Use spray, soap, and storage bags for clothes to minimize odors.

  • Rangefinder: Crucial for crossbow hunters to make precise, ethical shots.

Again, refer to our official Hunting Checklist on the Trip Information Page to ensure nothing is left behind.

6. Safety First

At Rut Chasers, safety is always our number one priority. Please remember these safety basics:

  • Always keep your crossbow pointed in a safe direction.

  • Never climb into a stand with a loaded crossbow.

  • Use your safety harness every time you’re in a tree stand.

  • Communicate with your guides and fellow hunters

By following these rules, you protect yourself and your fellow hunters.

7. The Thrill of the Ohio Rut

Ohio is one of the premier whitetail hunting destinations in the country, and for good reason. The state consistently produces trophy-class bucks thanks to quality habitat, strong genetics, and responsible management. Hunting this early in the season adds an extra level of anticipation, as bucks are drawn to the premium baits we have.

Here at Rut Chasers, we carefully manage our hunting properties to maximize your opportunities. We’ve scouted the land, set stands and blinds, and tracked deer movements so that when you step into the woods, you’re in the right place at the right time.

8. Final Countdown: A Few Days Away

As we approach the start of our first week of hunting, we want to encourage everyone to do a final run-through of their preparation:

  • License and permit purchased?

  • Crossbow/bow sighted in and inspected?

  • Gear packed using the checklist?

  • Travel/lodging arrangements confirmed?

  • Arrival time noted?

If you’ve answered “yes” to all of the above, you’re ready to hunt with Rut Chasers, LLC!

Conclusion: Be Ready for the Buck of a Lifetime

Deer hunting in Ohio is a dream for many hunters, and with the season just around the corner, opportunity is knocking. By preparing your licenses, crossbow, and gear ahead of time, you’ll ensure that your hunt is focused on what matters most: enjoying the outdoors, experiencing the thrill of the hunt, and hopefully harvesting a trophy whitetail.

At Rut Chasers, LLC, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. However, success begins with preparation, and that responsibility lies with each hunter. Let’s make this season one to remember—safe, organized, and full of lifelong memories.
